Ch. 4 LOL Story

Who Moved the Swimming Pool?

Many years ago, my late husband and I were asked to minister for a weekend in a church in Tucson, Arizona. The pastor told us to check in at the Motel 8 on Miracle Mile, and gave us the address. The church had an account with that motel, so the clerk knew Bill was a visiting preacher.

We lived in a small town, so the first thing I always wanted to do when we hit the big city was shop! I left my husband in front of the TV and took off.

I was known for two things back then: my love of shopping, and that I have no sense of direction. Because of the latter, I took careful note of the Waffle House next to the motel.

After several hours of my favorite pastime, I headed back down Miracle Mile (which was much longer than a mile) toward the Motel 8.

I saw my landmark, the Waffle House.

There’s the motel. Good. I didn’t get lost.

I pulled in and headed to 104, wiping the Arizona sweat off my forehead, thinking about the swimming pool which was right across from our room. I found the room, but something was wrong. Someone had moved the swimming pool! I checked my key. 104. I checked the door 104. I looked again. No pool. What’s going on here?

Oh, boy. Was it Motel 8 or Motel 6?

I went to the office. Sure enough. There was a Motel 6 on Miracle Mile. But there was also another Motel 8. It was a long street! But the clerk thought the Motel 8 was probably where I was staying because it was next to a Waffle House, but maybe the Motel 6 was next to a Waffle House, also. People in Tucson love their waffles.

She dialed the other Motel 8 and handed me the phone. The conversation went like this:

“Motel 8. How may I help you?”

“Yes. Could you tell me if Bill Thompson is registered there?”

“May I ask who’s calling?”

“His wife.”

A moment of silence.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t give out that information.”

I meant to go to the office later and tell the woman that the preacher in 104 was not having a tryst on the church’s dime, but I forgot. I’m sure she told that story more than once. Just goes to show you, things aren’t always what the seem.
